I really want to study how to show my dog, can anyone tell me how it is done?? Advice?

I'm a Siberian Husky Breeder, but I breed for sledding, not for show. I have a 5 month old Siberian right now that is drop dead gorgeous and listens very well. He's from champion bloodline. I'm too getting a puppy in the fall, I've already chosen the parents, and this one is champion sired and I've already been promised pick of the litter.

Well, I figured I'm going to have two show quality dogs, and I thought it might be interesting to try out showing, the only thing is I don't understand anything about it. I already asked my breeders to mentor me, however they are really working and don't want to.

What is a dog show like? What do you do? What is required? What kind of collar is used? What is the dog required to study and do? How much do they generally cost?

    Thanks, all advice welcome!

Funny how you just got a Siberian Husky puppy and have just one other dog and suddenly you are now a "breeder, breeding for sledding". Hard to have a sled dog team of one.

Here is your question from just some weeks ago

You are too asking about housetraining in another question, but sled dogs are kept outside-typically chained up. A sled dog is NOT A HOUSE PET

If you bought a show prospect your breeder will put you in contact with a handler so your dog can have a chance in the show ring.

It typically costs some thousand dollars to campaign a dog to its championship.

I would advise you go to the Siberian Husky Club of America or whatever Siberian Husky Club is in your country if you are outside of the US, and call them.

"I already asked my breeders to mentor me, however they are really working and don't want to."

EXCUSE ME???? I sure as heck wouldn't use THEM again if they were TOO BUSY to mentor me! A GOOD breeder WANTS to mentor others.

Oh, but Siberian Huskies are SO UNPREDICTABLE! I've seen so many parents begging for their Husky to be put to sleep because it bit a chunk of their kids arm out.

How does it feel to have YOUR breed stereotyped like that?

I have to agree with the others. Most show breeders will only place a show quality puppy with someone who they can be sure will actually show it. They want their puppies out in the rings for the world to see and they want titles on them. Many don't mind placing a nice show puppy with new people but you can bet they will be in regular contact with you helping you maintain and train the puppy to show to it's full potential. They shouldn't be too working to help or to mentor you unless they are simply pet breeders selling you a pet quality dog at a higher price and telling you it is show quality. Unfortunately there are a lot of backyard breeders who do just that. They understand nothing about showing but there dog has one champion in the pedigree so they often con new people into buying their puppies as show potential when in reality they should not be shown or bred.
You should get in touch with a breeder from the referral list on the Siberian Husky Club of America website and ask them to look over your dogs' pedigrees and photos. It can be hard to appraise a dog simply from photos because even a gorgeous dog can have structural faults that only appear when the dog is moving. It's a good place to start though. If you haven't received the puppy from the "busy" mentors yet, I would suggest you hold off on committing to one of their puppies and look for a show breeder who has more time to mentor you and a stronger commitment to their hold line.

Really working and don't want to?! Pretty crappy "mentors" if you ask me. Most breeders would be delighted to get their puppy people started off in showing.

Your best bet is to start going to shows to watch. See what the people are doing and using, tell to the exhibitors (but not when they're frantically preparing or just about to go in the ring). There are some snots, but most of us are kind and willing to help newbies.

Then find some handling classes in your area so you can study to present your dogs properly. Once you've had some practice, get your feet wet by entering matches, then move on to the true shows.

      Remember to have fun!
